Chili Cheese Tater Tot Casserole

I made this recipe with the Super Bowl in mind. What screams Super Bowl more than chili? Throw some cheese and tater tots on top and I’m in heaven.

Chili Cheese Tater Tot Casserole

Chili Cheese Tater Tot Casserole
  • ¾ lb extra lean ground beef

  • ½ an onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 jalapeno, minced

  • 1 small (156ml) can tomato paste

  • 1 ¼ cups water

  • 2 tsp. chilli powder

  • 1 tsp. cumin

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • ½ cup cream cheese, cubed

  • 1 cup canned kidney beans, drained and rinsed

  • 1 cup grated Havarti cheese

  • 35-40 frozen tater tots

  • 2 green onions, sliced


Preheat oven to 450F.

In an oven safe skillet, brown the meat over medium heat, breaking it up with a wooden spoon while it cooks. Drain any excess fat, and add in onions, jalapenos and garlic. Reduce heat to medium low. Sauté for 5 minutes, until the onions soften and lightly brown.

Add in tomato paste, water, chilli powder, cumin and salt and pepper. Stir in cream cheese, combining until melted. Mix in beans and then top with shredded Havarti. Place frozen tater tots over top, forming 3 circles.

Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool for 5 minutes. Top with sliced green onions and serve.
